Abby's First Annual Summer Run for the Cure!

I'm sure you have all seen Run for the Cure events around your towns, and so this may not seem like a big deal. But what do you say when you find out it was a 9 year old girl who organized it! Abby is our 9 year old cousin/neighbor, and earlier this summer she said to her mom "I want to raise money for Breast Cancer." Completely out of the blue! They started talking about what they could do and came up with a run/walk, they could hold at their house. We have a trail that loops around the property. They had a family friend who had a connection to Team Check Your Boobies- for the Susan G. Komen 3 day for the Cure- 60 mile walk for Breast Cancer Research. And the planning began. Abby emailed all of her friends and family and told them what she wanted to do. She talked in that email about Breast Cancer and included facts that we may not have known. I am including them here.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and is the leading cause of death among women worldwide.

Approximately 1.4 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer globally each year.

Approximately 456,000 people worldwide die from the disease each year.

Somewhere in the world, a woman dies from breast cancer every 69 seconds.

In the past 25 years, incidence rates have risen approximately 30 percent in westernized countries.

Nancy G. Brinker, Founder and CEO of Komen and Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control for the U.N.'s World Health Organization, is urging global health officials to include cancer in global health agendas.

100% of the money raised by Abby's Summer Run For the Cure will go to the "check your boobies team" captained by our family friend Shari Lippmann.  Her team will be doing the
Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure® . Here are some facts about that event:

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a 60-mile walk for women and men who want to make a personal difference in the fight to end breast cancer. Participants commit to raise at
least $2,300 and spend several months training to prepare for the event. They devote the entire three-day weekend to the cause.

Since its inception in 2003, the Komen 3-Day for the Cure has raised nearly $600 million.

3-Day for the Cure net proceeds help pay for vital global breast cancer research and local community programs supporting education, screening and treatment. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® paid for more than 600,000 breast screenings in 2009--part of a more than $1.5 billion commitment to research, advocacy and community programs since Komen was founded in 1982.

3-Day for the Cure participants walk an average of 20 miles a day during the event. Participants are provided meals, snacks, drinks, shower facilities, tents, safety guidelines and
24-hour medical support--all resources needed for a safe and memorable experience. A crew of volunteers spends the entire weekend with walkers and staff to make the event possible.

Shari Lippmann is a friend of Abby's Family. She is part of Team Check Your Boobies and I encourage you to check out not only her personal page but also the Check your Boobies website! It has tons of great information for all of us!

We walked for 1 and half hours. Most of the kids ran/walked 4 or 5 miles! 4 laps was a mile so that was a lot of running and on tough terrain. Our trail is quite rugged in some spots! Which made me only doing 2 and half miles something to be proud of. That trail was kicking my butt! There was A LOT OF PINK :) Even Keegan sported a pink shirt! It was A LOT of fun! She as well as her siblings and friends dug into their own piggy banks to make donations. They along with the participants and some that couldn't be there and donated anyways contributing to the Over $1000.00 that was raised!

She was modest but gracious when I told her how proud I was of her. I also made sure she knew how everyone was commenting on "HOW COOL" it was that she had come up with the idea, and how impressed they were with the event. Her whole family (mom, dad, sisters and brother) were there to help. They flagged the course the night before and put out signs along the trail. Even her dad and brother sported hot pink shirts! She was shy and reserved as she read her little speech thanking everyone for coming, and she was pretty beat after everyone left, but was happy with how it all came together. I was amongst those SO IMPRESSED and I hope that my kids were moved by the idea, and now find ways to make their own difference in the world!

Here's how the fun played out :) Again! Great Job Abby! And great job to the 57 of us that walked the walk.

WHAT A GREAT EVENT!
