I have no interest in burying my head in the sand and being naive to the happenings of the world. I simply can not live my life to the fullest or be the best that I can be though if I let it all in. So while I recognize that it is there and plan on doing everything I can to make this world better. I choose goodness, love, and all of the beautiful things.
I had this epiphany the other day as I was watching the movie Pollyanna for the first time in years. In a scene where she is talking to her disheartened preacher, she brings up the fact that her deceased father (also a preacher) had felt the same way as he. Until one day he found a quote. Here she proceeds to read a quote engraved upon her necklace.
"If you look for the bad in mankind expecting to find it, you surely will."
In the movie Pollyanna says it was Abraham Lincoln who said this, which he actually didn't, but that doesn't make it less true.
It made me think. With this barrage of technology, of information and images, It is natural to become overwhelmed. SO here is my quest and I hope yours too. GO FIND THE BEAUTY!
At first I was thinking about it as visual beauty. As in a sunset is beautiful. Or like a crisp Fall morning, where the fog is sweeping across the fields. But then today I was picking Cam up from school and I saw two trucks with their beds FULL OF CANNED FOOD for the food bank. They pulled up and about 5 older gentlemen started unloading. They were all smiling as they stacked. Giving one another a pat on the back or a squeeze of the shoulder, a nod that said without a word "this is so great!" I wished I had my camera, because that to me was SO beautiful.
Then tonight I watched my kids work together. The same kids that I thought were sending me to the loony bin yesterday! They were playing outside and running in with cheeks flush from the exercise and chilly temperature. It was Keegan and Delaney happily practicing their violins together. Keegan doing his homework, quickly, efficiently, without complaint! Maddie eating an early dinner then snuggling up on the couch for an early night night. My ailing doggie chasing rabbits in his dreams beneath our beautiful Christmas tree. A hug and a kiss from brother to sister for no reason at all. A lovely conversation about the highs and lows of our days at dinner. Today I was surrounded by beauty.
It will probably not happen again for a while and that just makes it all the more appreciated. That is why I urge you again. GO FIND THE BEAUTY! And report back. Send me a moment of beauty to share with the group. We all need a little happy. A little beauty. A little hopeful! So go! What are you waiting for!
Love to all!
Ashley
